“Do I need a permit?” is the most common question we get — and the honest answer is that it depends on where your property is and what you’re building.
Four different things
- Contractor registration: some local governments ask fence contractors to register (for example, providing insurance certificates) before working there.
- Building permit: a permit from the building department, usually tied to height, commercial use or construction type.
- Zoning rules and approval: height limits by yard, setbacks, corner visibility and material rules — these can apply even when no building permit is needed.
- HOA approval: private deed restrictions; separate from government rules.
Florida does not issue a state license for fence installation.
What we know for unincorporated Hernando County
A county building permit is required for commercial fences, residential fences 7 feet or taller, and fences supported by brick, block or concrete columns. Zoning standards still apply to fences of any height, and Brooksville has its own city rules.
Everywhere else we serve
Fence permitting and zoning requirements vary by property and jurisdiction. Xtreme Fence will help determine the applicable requirements for your project.
Pools
Pool barriers follow Florida’s Chapter 515 minimums plus local requirements — see Pool Fence.
